Antigenic drift in visna: virus variation during long-term infection of Icelandic sheep.
A group of 20 Icelandic sheep were infected intracerebrally with visna virus strain 1514, and 209 virus isolates were obtained from the blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and central nervous system (CNS) over a period of 7 years, during which eight animals developed clinical signs of visna necessitating sacrifice. (i) Using type-specific antisera, it was found that 12 (16%) of 76 isolates tested escap...
متن کاملCharacterization of visna virus envelope neuraminic acid.
Visna virus particles inhibit influenza virus hemagglutination in an assay for neuraminic acid-containing viruses. Pretreatment of visna virus with neuraminidase abolished hemagglutination inhibition activity but did not significantly affect attachment, infectivity, or virus-induced cell fusion in sheep choroid plexus cell monolayers.
متن کاملIdentification of Aptamer-Binding Sites in Hepatitis C Virus Envelope Glycoprotein E2
Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) encodes two envelope glycoproteins, E1 and E2. Our previous work selected a specific aptamer ZE2, which could bind to E2 with high affinity, with a great potential for developing new molecular probes as an early diagnostic reagents or therapeutic drugs targeting HCV. In this study, the binding sites between E2 and aptamer ZE2 were further explored. E2 was truncated to 15...
متن کاملStructural requirements for low-pH-induced rearrangements in the envelope glycoprotein of tick-borne encephalitis virus.
The exposure of the flavivirus tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus to an acidic pH is necessary for virus-induced membrane fusion and leads to a quantitative and irreversible conversion of the envelope protein E dimers to trimers. To study the structural requirements for this oligomeric rearrangement, the effect of low-pH treatment on the oligomeric state of different isolated forms of protein ...
متن کاملAntigenic characterization of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) envelope glycoprotein precursor incorporated into nanodiscs
The entry of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) into host cells is mediated by the viral envelope glycoproteins (Envs), which are derived by the proteolytic cleavage of a trimeric gp160 Env precursor. The mature Env trimer is a major target for entry inhibitors and vaccine-induced neutralizing antibodies. Env interstrain variability, conformational flexibility and heavy glycosylation contribu...
